Rating: 4/5

Genre: Productivity, Focus

Summary

Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks. This skill is becoming increasingly rare and increasingly valuable in our economy.

Key Concepts

Deep Work vs Shallow Work

Deep Work: Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit.

Shallow Work: Non-cognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted.

The Deep Work Hypothesis

The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy.

Strategies for Deep Work

  1. Monastic: Eliminate all shallow work (rare, for researchers)
  2. Bimodal: Dedicate specific seasons to deep work
  3. Rhythmic: Daily routine with fixed deep work time
  4. Journalistic: Fit deep work wherever you can

I use the rhythmic approach: 6-9 AM for deep work before the workday starts.

Rules

  1. Work Deeply: Schedule every minute, embrace boredom
  2. Embrace Boredom: Don't reach for phone when waiting
  3. Quit Social Media: Or at least be intentional
  4. Drain the Shallows: Batch and minimize shallow tasks

My Implementation

Morning Deep Work Block

  • 6:00 AM: Wake, coffee, no phone
  • 6:30-9:00 AM: Deep work (coding, writing, learning)
  • 9:00 AM: Check email, start "shallow" workday

Tools

  • Focus mode on phone during deep work
  • Website blockers (Cold Turkey)
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Pomodoro Technique for structure
